The most useful Acute Medicine SCE resources are the free official material (the Federation’s blueprint, sample questions and annual reports), current UK guidelines, one dedicated SCE question bank and a concise acute medicine handbook. Most candidates do not need more than that. This guide lists what is available, what each type of resource is good for, and how to combine them without paying for overlap.
Exam information checked on 31 October 2026.
Free official Acute Medicine SCE resources
Start with the official blueprint, which sets out the 13 categories and their question counts. Our syllabus and blueprint guide explains each category.
The Federation offers online sample questions for Acute Medicine. You register to start the mock, and the answers are shown when you finish. It is the only official example of the question style we have found.
The Federation’s annual results reports, such as the 2025 report, give the pass mark, pass rates and performance by category. Our pass mark guide summarises them.
The Society for Acute Medicine trainee hub links to the exam pages and publishes an SCE revision resources document (updated December 2024) that maps UK guidelines to each system. Some information on the hub is older than the Federation’s pages, so take dates and rules from the Federation.
Books
The Oxford Handbook of Acute Medicine (4th edition, 2019, Ramrakha, Moore and Sam) is a practical reference for acute presentations and is on the Society for Acute Medicine’s reading list. Because it was published in 2019, check management recommendations against current guidance.
Best of Five MCQs for the Acute Medicine SCE (Lane, Powter and Patel, Oxford University Press, 2016) is a book of exam-style questions, also on the society’s list. It suits candidates who like working on paper. Some guidance has changed since 2016, so check any answer that turns on a threshold or drug choice.
The society also lists Acute Medicine: Clinical Cases Uncovered and the Oxford Textbook of Medicine. A large textbook is best used to look up topics you keep getting wrong, rather than read cover to cover.
Question banks
A question bank is usually the core of revision for a best-of-five exam. The table lists online banks with an Acute Medicine SCE product, using each provider’s own description, checked on 31 October 2026. It is not an independent rating.
| Provider | What it describes |
|---|---|
| StudyPRN | Acute Medicine SCE question bank with explanations and further reading, a three-hour mock exam and a free trial |
| BMJ OnExamination | Acute Medicine SCE revision product; see the provider’s page for current features |
| iatroX | Blueprint-mapped questions, timed 100-question papers and a limited free allowance; one subscription covers its exam banks |
| License Medical | Acute Medicine SCE question bank with timed mocks and optional revision notes |
| Revision Pro | 1,766 questions across all 13 categories (118 with images), 293 revision notes, 4,000+ flashcards, 40 podcast episodes and Mock Mode |
General medicine banks also help with the shared core. Passmedicine, for example, offers an MRCP Part 2 Written bank but does not list an Acute Medicine SCE bank. It is useful background, but it is not weighted to the SCE blueprint.
Our question bank guide has a checklist for choosing between banks and 10 free sample questions.
Courses
We could not confirm any taught Acute Medicine SCE revision course with published dates for 2027, so none is listed here. Ask your training programme director or regional acute medicine group whether one is planned before May 2027.
Online courses, such as Revision Pro’s, combine a question bank with notes and other formats so you can revise in short sessions between shifts.
Pick one main question bank and finish it before buying a second. Spreading across several banks makes it harder to see which categories are still weak.
How to combine resources
A simple combination works for most candidates: the blueprint to plan, one SCE question bank for daily practice, a handbook and current guidelines for the topics you get wrong, and the official sample questions to check the style. Add the annual reports to see where candidates lose marks. Our 12-week revision plan shows how to fit these into the time before the 5 May 2027 sitting.
Revision Pro for the Acute Medicine SCE
Questions, revision notes, flashcards, podcasts and a timed Mock Mode in one course. The introductory price is £49 for access until 6 May 2027, the day after the exam.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best book for the Acute Medicine SCE?
There is no official reading list from the Federation. The Society for Acute Medicine lists the Oxford Handbook of Acute Medicine and Best of Five MCQs for the Acute Medicine SCE among its recommendations.
Do I need more than one question bank?
Not necessarily. Finishing one bank that covers all 13 categories, with careful review, is more useful than starting several.
Are MRCP Part 2 resources enough?
They help with the general medicine core, but they are not weighted to the SCE blueprint. Check that you also cover categories such as clinical pharmacology and poisoning, critical care and the Other group.
